The following are just a few of the common terms used in the cleaning industry, which we hope you will find useful:

ACID - A water soluble substance with pH less than 7 that reacts with and neutralises an alkali.

ALGAE - Microscopic single cell plants that grow in water, contain chlorophyll and require sunlight.

ALGAECIDE - Product which destroys algae.

ALKALI - A chemical substance with pH greater than 7 that reacts with and neutralises acid.

ALKALINITY - This is useful for removing acidic, fatty and oily soils. Detergent products are formulated at varying levels of alkalinity, depending on the cleaning task.

AMMONIA - An alkaline gas composed of nitrogen and hydrogen. It is used to aid in removing grease and dirt from surfaces and to boost the cleaning power of grease cutters, wax strippers and general purpose cleaners.

BACTERIA - Single cell microorganisms not containing chlorophyll. Germs.

BACTERICIDE - A chemical agent that destroys bacteria.

BACTERIOSTAT - A chemical agent that prevents bacteria from multiplying and growing (doesn't kill).

BIODEGRADABLE - Capability of organic matter to be decomposed by biological processes.

DISINFECTANT - An agent that destroys harmful bacteria and/or viruses on inanimate surfaces (except spores). Most common types include Quaternary Ammonium Compounds (QACs), Phenolic Compounds and Pine Oil.

EMULSIFICATION - The action of breaking up fats, oils, and other soils into small particles which are then suspended in solution.

pH - A simple chemical scale which expresses the degree of acidity or alkalinity of a solution. The scale runs from 0 to 14. Numbers below 7 indicate acidity. Above 7 is the alkaline side.

SANITISER - An agent that reduces the number of bacteria to a safe level, but does not completely eliminate them. Usually in food service areas.

SPORE - A hard shell-like structure of a rod shaped bacteria which has an inactive form, and is the most resistant of all living things to heat, chemicals and drying. Can only be destroyed by sterilization.

SURFACTANT - Surface-active agent which increases the emulsifying, foaming, dispersing, spreading and wetting properties of a product.

SUSPENSION - The process of a cleaning agent holding insoluble dirt particles in the cleaning solution and keeping them from redepositing on a clean floor.

WETTING AGENT - A chemical which reduces surface tension of water, allowing it to spread more freely.

Our product, REFRESH, is a concentrated neutral cleaner, which is safe for use on all hard surfaces, such as floors, painted walls, glass, as well as leather and plastic upholstery. After cleaning, a long lasting, refreshing fragrance is left behind.

Sanitisers are used on previously cleaned surfaces to kill residual bacteria and germs on food contact surfaces. All sanitisers in the US, authorised by the US Dept. of Agriculture (USDA) are non-fragranced products. Perfumes and fragrances can be absorbed into food easily and very rapidly, therefore, the USDA does not allow any fragrance in products used for the final sanitation cleaning stage. MOMAR in South Africa, offers two non-fragranced USDA-authorised sanitisers -- FIRST MATE and SANI-PLANT. They may be used in any food processing area, from kitchens to abattoirs.

When Autumn and Winter come along, the importance of having effective disinfectants/sanitisers on hand, cannot be emphasised enough. Kill the germs and bacteria before they can get to you or your staff. Use SAFE!, ARREST or ACT-ON around your premises, and cut down on absenteeism caused by winter illnesses. The use of HAN-I-SIZE, the instant hands and arms sanitiser will also help prevent the cross-contamination of germs.

When it comes to a water resistant grease, our Aluminium Complex based Lubest TITAN 888 is hard to beat. While our Lubest greases all perform well in water washout tests, TITAN 888 offers by far, the best protection. In fact, a US customer, M&M MARS, is using TITAN 888 in a wastewater pump that is completely submerged under water!

When cooling towers go into their off cycle, sometimes remaining unused for several months, it is imperative that corrosion be reduced to a minimum. Application of our product AquaTrol S-6960 will establish a protective corrosion inhibiting film on metal surfaces of the system. It will also eliminate the formation of corrosion byproducts that can contribute to fouling and cause troublesome deposition. System startup will be considerably easier.
