TERMS RELATED TO KILLING GERMS
Germicides are more effective if their makeup is understood. Disinfectants, sterilants, and sanitisers are three categories of germicides that cover a wide range of product chemistry and areas of use. Generally, germicides are chemicals used to kill germs on a surface.
Here are some terms associated with disinfectants, sterilants and sanitisers.
Antiseptic. A chemical agent that kills microorganisms when applied to the skin, including antiseptic hand soaps, iodine and alcohol (e.g. our products ESCORT and HAN-I-SIZE).
Disinfectant, germicide, bactericide, antimicrobial, antibacterial. A chemical agent that destroys pathogenic microorganisms, but not spores. The term is generally used for an agent that kills microorganisms on inanimate surfaces, rather than on people and animals (e.g. our products ARREST, SAFE!).
Sanitiser. A chemical agent that reduces the number of microorganisms to a safe level, typically considered to be a reduction of 99.9%, by killing them (e.g. our products FIRST MATE and SANI-PLANT). The term is also often used to describe a level of cleanliness associated with food processing, food preparation and food service.
